
Pit and Fissure Sealants

This course is designed to meet the standards of the California Dental Board, for the instruction and application in pit and fissure sealant. Provider number PF186. This includes 16 hours of didactic, laboratory, and clinical application of pit and fissure sealants. This combination class, is generally offered on Saturdays, and is on a limited space basis.
This course is required for the unlicensed dental assistant seeking to become an RDA or for those already licensed as a Registered Dental Assistant or to meet renewal requirements for new RDA’s. ONLY an RDA can perform pit and fissure sealants after completion of a board approved course in pit and fissure sealants.
Prerequisites: BLS Certification AHA or ARC, 8-hour Infection Control Certification, Dental Practice Act Certification, Radiation Safety Certification, and Coronal Polish Certification OR current RDA license along with proof of current BLS certification.
STUDENT REQUIREMENTS:
- Must provide a copy of current CPR BLS certification (AHA or ARC), 8-hour Infection Control Certification, Dental Practice Act Certification.
- Student must have knowledge of the dentition. (jaws, teeth, universal numbering system)
- Students are asked to wear scrubs and not wear open-toed footwear.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
- Complete all precourse work prior to the start of the course.
- Perform and complete applying sealants in all 4 quadrants on a manikin.
- Must pass a written exam (above 75%) prior to placing sealants on human patients.
- Perform and complete applying sealants to four (4) clinical patients
- Each clinical patient shall possess a minimum of four (4) teeth (at least 1 tooth in each quadrant), non-restored, sufficiently erupted teeth to maintain a dry field.
- Must complete all the necessary forms and turn in all required documentation before granted completion certificate.
Please note we do not provide the patients. You are responsible to provide your own patients. Patients will be scheduled at our facilities under the supervison of an instructor. You will not be able to perform the clinical portion in your office.
PATIENT REQUIREMENTS:
- Patients must be at least 18 years old and must be capable of providing informed consent.
- Must not have any restorations on the tooth selected to be sealed.
- Tooth selected must not have any cavities or demineralization.
All course requirements for didactic, lab, and clinical instruction, including the requirements for human patients are consistent with the California Dental Board regulations and must be fulfilled in order to achieve a completion certificate.
